New Growth Through Intergenerational Relationships

Mar 25, 2025

Executive Director
GenOn Ministries

I took a micro-walk the other day. Just a 15-minute stroll around my neighborhood to stretch my legs and clear my head in the middle of a workday. To soak in some natural Vitamin D. I was beckoned outside by the 72 degrees—spring was in the air!

Spring hadn’t officially arrived, but I could tell it was coming. I saw the evidence and the signs of new growth. Not just feeling the warm temps (no gloves! no hat!) but seeing the early pink buds on some of the trees and yellow jonquils poking out of the mulch in my neighbors’ yards. Evidence and signs are encouragement of more to come. They keep us moving forward.

Where are the evidence and signs of new growth in relationships in your congregation these days? What’s “in the air” that you can feel and see and indicates a thriving Christ-centered context? Where is faith growing? What is encouragement about what’s more to come? What keeps you moving forward?

My signs of new growth are spontaneous and informal conversations I notice in the church hallways or in the local grocery store. Where people of different generations from different families in the church are catching up and checking in. These “informals,” I believe, bubble out of the “intentionals” over time.

GenOn wants to help your faith community move intentionally to new growth through intergenerational relationships—in your homes and in your congregation—by nurturing Christ-centered community where two or more generations in planned and purposeful settings are mutually invested.

GenOn Resources

Resources that bring folks together to love one another and love God deeply include our God’s World in Community, All God’s Children: The Church Family Gathers, and LIFT (Living In Faith Together). If you’re a LOGOS church, check out what we’ve got to strengthen each of the 4 parts as you look ahead to your next program year.

See what we’re working on for intergenerational faith formation in the home through our grant-funded Christian Parenting Project. We’re gaining deep insight into what church leaders need to support caregivers as we work with our pilot congregations and their families. Some awesome freebies are available for everyone now.

GenOn Training

Whether you’re beginning to learn about intergenerational ministry or are ready to dive deeper, we’ve got options for you. If you’d like to explore LOGOS or want some help maintaining your midweek ministry, check out this page

GenOn Youth Summit

For more than 50 years, we’ve been gathering ecumenical church groups, drawing together high schoolers, young adults, and their ministry leaders. This intergenerational week each summer includes mission outreach to the local community in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. More details here. Still time to register for this summer! No group too large or too small.

Well, enjoy the change of seasons—no matter what hemisphere you’re in! I think I’ll go on a holy hike this weekend. How about you?
